I don’t know about you, but I’ve always loved quotes.
I love their power to help and inspire you when you are stuck in a deep black quagmire.
I love how a quote can contain no more than a few words, but still be so powerful that it remains unforgettable over a life time.
I love how a one sentence quote can be unforgettably humorous or inspirational, and in some cases even both.
But why is it that we love quotes so much?
Ward Farnsworth, dean of the University of Texas School of Law and author of Farnsworth’s Classical English Rhetoric states in a Fast Company article that people have an “appetite for well-expressed wisdom, motivational or otherwise.” This makes good sense.
Farnsworth also discusses how powerful quotes are often very well structured and beautifully expressed. He mentions how quotes can be effective when their two halves are “attractively balanced,” or when they use metaphor to caricature a subject or make it highly visible.
Whatever the reason, quotes are such a beautiful example of the simple power of words.
Below are a few of my favourites.
I hope you enjoy them.
